Jason Leffler Lands Ninth After Wild Ride in Texas PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 November 2007
Jason Leffler came close to topping his career-best performance at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday after surviving a wild Texas ride which included a spark-filled finish to the Silverado 350K.  After the smoke settled, the dust cleared, and NASCAR reviewed the replay, Leffler crossed the finish line in ninth, only one spot shy of his best career finish at the 1.5-mile oval in a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series ride.

Leffler, who had one previous Bud Pole at Texas Motor Speedway, qualified the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra in ninth after posting a fast lap of 29.581 seconds at a speed of 182.550 but his Toyota bottomed out on his qualifying lap which blew a hole out in the oil pan.  The Red Horse Racing crew elected to give up track position to fix the problem and dropped to the rear of the field for the start of the 147-lap race for "unapproved impound adjustments".

Leffler started the race in 31st spot but quickly proved to have one of the faster trucks on the track as he bolted by his competitors and into the top-20 by lap eight.  "Good job bud," said Crew Chief Jamie "JJ" Jones.  When a caution flew on lap 11 for a wreck out of turn four, Leffler keyed the radio to tell "JJ" that his Toyota was "pumping water out" but that it started cooling down under caution.  Leffler restarted the race in 15th position and quickly worked his way into 12th just 20 laps later.

"I could use a five speed right now," said Leffler after struggling to find speed.  "It's so gear bound, it's not even funny.  I'm running 9,200 RPM and it's not going anywhere."  While fighting to find speed, Leffler was loose and needed to be tightened up on his first pit stop.  Leffler's first opportunity to pit for adjustments came under caution on lap 39 after a crash brought out the events third caution.  Leffler hit pit road for four tires, fuel, and air pressure and track bar adjustments, returning to the track after picking up six positions on pit road to restart the race in sixth position.

On the restart, Leffler was too tight and slid to ninth.  "We tightened it up too much," said Leffler.  "It just gets so aero tight that I can't pass anybody.  I think it was better before we made those adjustments."  Leffler gave up ninth spot after the caution was displayed on lap 70 to hit pit road for fuel and a track bar adjustment.  While on pit road, the crew discovered that another team's shock was protruding through the nose of their Toyota and Leffler had to come back down pit road to ensure that the shock did no serious damage to the RFMS/Red Horse Racing machine.

Leffler restarted in 18th and worked his way into 15th by lap 87 but he was held up for a few laps by a slower truck.  Leffler made the pass for 14th on lap 90 before keying the radio to tell the crew that he was "really, really tight".  Following Leffler's radio communication, the leaders began to pit, under green flag conditions.  Leffler moved into ninth but pleaded with "JJ" to return to pit road.  "I'm so tight here, we're losing time to the leaders, man," he said.  "I think I have a right front coming apart here.  Seriously."

"JJ" called Leffler to pit road on lap 124, giving up 11th spot.  The crew outfitted the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota with four tires, fuel, and a significant chassis adjustment.  Leffler returned to the track and continued to race as hard as he could while fighting the tight condition.  "It's really, really aero tight," said Leffler from 15th position just before another caution flew on lap 141.  When the race resumed, Leffler dodged the event's final two cautions, including a red flag and a wild green/white/checkered finish, to take home ninth place honors in his fourth career start in Fort Worth, Texas.  "You did a good job guys," said Leffler.  "We'll go get them in Phoenix."

Leffler and the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota will return to action at Phoenix International Raceway on Friday, November 9th, 2007.  Live coverage from the one-mile oval for the running of the Casino Arizona 150 will be broadcast live on SPEED at 7:30 p.m. ET with radio coverage coming to you live from MRN Radio.
