Jason Leffler and the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra
entered the "Valley of the Sun" for Friday night's running of the
Casino Arizona 150 where Leffler was gambling on his chance to return
to Victory Lane. After having a little sun shine down on their
RFMS/Red Horse Racing team in practice and qualifying, a tight
condition kept Leffler from cashing in on a win at the 1-mile oval of
Phoenix International Raceway.
After a fairly early draw in qualifying, the Long Beach, California
native hit the Phoenix flat-track laying down a lap of 27.515 seconds
at a speed of 130.838 miles per hour which was good for a fifth-place
starting spot for Friday night's 150-lap race.
"Let's have great pit stops like we did last week and I'll see you
in Victory Lane," said Leffler, who was genuinely confident as he
strapped in behind the wheel of the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota.
When the green flag dropped, Leffler's Toyota was "way too tight"
but that didn't keep him from battling in the top-10. Good track
position kept Leffler from being caught up in the event's first three
cautions, but when the fourth caution flag flew, Leffler joined most of
the field and gave up seventh spot to hit pit road for four tires,
fuel, and significant air pressure and track bar adjustments. Leffler
returned to the track in 11th position, after three trucks elected not
to pit.
When the race restarted on lap 40, Leffler was "still tight off" but
he assured the team that it would get better. "We'll see where we're
at when the pressures build up." Leffler worked his way into ninth by
lap 44, but was forced to take evasive action after two trucks came
together while battling for fifth position on the frontstretch. "On
your nose!" exclaimed Spotter, Kevin Ray, as Leffler drove around the
two-truck wreck.
Leffler was sixth on the restart on lap 61. "The truck is about the
same," said Leffler just before the next caution was displayed for a
single truck wreck on the frontstretch. Leffler gave up sixth position
to hit pit road under the caution flag for four tires, fuel, and wedge
and air pressure adjustments. With eight trucks on a different pit
strategy, Leffler returned to the track in 12th position.
Over the next few laps, Leffler worked his way into eighth, proving
that his Toyota was better with the last round of adjustments as called
for by Crew Chief Jamie Jones. "We're in good shape when we're out
front," said Leffler after the next caution flew on lap 81. When the
race resumed just three laps later, Leffler continued his charge to the
front. Leffler picked off his competition at nearly a truck per lap
and was shown in fourth position by lap 96. "Those adjustments fixed
that late exit push," said Leffler. "It's quite a bit better now."
When the next caution flag flew on lap 106, Leffler told the crew
"the truck doesn't come in for three or four laps, but once it gets
going, it turns good." The race went green on lap 109, but with three
more cautions in a forty-one lap span, Leffler didn't have the long
green flag runs he needed to reel in the rest of his competition to
take home the win.
"It was a fun race," said Leffler after scoring his second fourth
place finish for Red Horse Racing in only four starts this year. "The
guys really gave me a good truck. We had a top-five truck today -- and
finished fourth. I'm pretty happy and looking forward to going to
Homestead. I get to run the Tundra there and work with these guys once
more. I've enjoyed working with these guys at Red Horse Racing. I was
hoping to get a win and next week is our last chance, so hopefully we
can do that."
Leffler and the Red Horse Racing team will take the No. 1 RFMS/Red
Horse Racing Toyota Tundra to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Ford 200
on Friday, November 16th. Live television coverage from the 1.5-mile
oval will be provided by SPEED at 7:30 p.m. ET with radio coverage
coming to you live from MRN Radio.
