Jason Leffler raced his way to his third top-five
finish for Red Horse Racing on Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway
in only his fifth start behind the wheel of the No. 1 RFMS Toyota
Tundra. Leffler’s true racing talent, coupled with the knowledge of a
veteran Crew Chief and one of the most talented crews on pit road
helped Red Horse Racing finish eighth in the 2007 NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series Owner Point Standings in only their second full-season of
racing in the highly competitive Truck Series.
“I’ve
got to thank Tom DeLoach, Jeff Hammond, and everybody at Red Horse
Racing for putting me in this truck – they’ve given me really strong
trucks for these five races and I've had a lot of fun,” said Leffler of
his time driving the No. 1 RFMS Toyota. “I would have liked to have
gotten a win for them before the end of the season, but hopefully they
will let me run some more races next year.”
Leffler started the Ford 200 from the 13th
position after laying down a lap of 31.672 seconds at a speed of
170.498 miles per hour in qualifying. But Leffler didn’t stay there
for very long as he quickly worked his way past two trucks and into 11th
position before the first caution flag flew for a single truck wreck in
turn two. “It’s pretty free right now but I wouldn’t touch it,” said
Leffler, under caution, on lap 16. “We’ll just keep on diggin’ here.”
Leffler
continued to dig as the race restarted on lap 19. Leffler was eighth
before he gave up the track position to hit pit road, under the green
flag, on lap 55 for four tires, fuel, and air pressure and track bar
adjustments. Leffler returned to the track and was shown 16th
on the scoring monitor before an inopportune caution came out on lap 75
for debris, trapping several trucks one lap down. “We’ll stay out
Jason,” said Crew Chief Jamie Jones. “We’ll take a chance right
here.” Leffler would have been trapped one lap down, but Jones’ quick
call to stay out while the leaders pitted kept Leffler in front of the
leaders and on the tail end of the lead lap for the restart just five
laps later. “If we get a quick caution right here, we’ll be back on
the lead lap.”
When the race resumed, Leffler was 13th
and led the field to the green flag. Leffler got passed by the leader,
but as was hoped, another caution was displayed on lap 82 for a wreck
in turn two giving Leffler the “Lucky Dog” pass and allowing him to
return to the lead lap. “Good call there Jamie,” said Leffler. “We’re
back in the game.”
While
under caution, Leffler hit pit road for four tires, fuel, and a track
bar adjustment, returning to the track at the tail end of the longest
line in 12th position. Leffler didn’t remain there long as
the race restarted and he used his fresh tires to work his way past
slower trucks and into fifth position by lap 108. When NASCAR threw
the final caution flag on lap 134 for a wreck on the frontstretch that
setup a green/white/checkered flag finish, Leffler thought he had
something for the fourth place truck, but he settled for fifth in his
final race of the year for Red Horse Racing.
"It
was a pretty decent day,” said Leffler. “We just got a lap down on
that yellow and Jamie made a good call to stay out. We were on the
tail end of the lead lap and the yellow came out real quick and we got
our lap back. We raced from 12th to fifth. I thought I
could race Harvick there at the end, but I got up there and wore my
stuff out. It’s been fun racing in the Truck Series and maybe next
year we can do a few more.”
